Eleven Reasons Why Having E-Mail is Like Having a Penis
Filed Under links, informatique | Leave a Comment
#11. Those who have it would be devastated if it was ever cut off.
#10. Those who have it think that those who don’t are somehow inferior.
#9. Those who don’t have it may agree that it’s neat, but think it’s not worth the fuss that those who have it make about it.
#8. Many of those who don’t have it would like to try it, a phenomenon psychologists call E-mail Envy.
#7. It’s more fun when it’s up, but this makes it hard to get any real work done.
#6. In the distant past, its only purpose was to
transmit information vital to the survival of the species. Some people
still think that’s the only thing it should be used for, but most folks
today use it mostly for fun.
#5. If you don’t take proper precautions, it can spread viruses.
#4. If you use it too much you’ll find it becomes more and more difficult to think coherently.
#3. We attach an importance to it that is far greater than its actual size and influence warrant.
#2. If you’re not careful what you do with it, it can get you into a lot of trouble.
AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY E-MAIL IS LIKE HAVING A PENIS:
#1. If you play with it too much, you can go blind.

Good question !
Filed Under health, informatique | Leave a Comment
Seen on Slashdot, an anonymous reader writes this question :
My Health Sciences Campus has about 8,000 desktop computers, and on any given night about half of them are left on. I know this because I track all the MAC addresses in case there is a virus outbreak. Aside from the current fad of ‘being green’, has anyone had any success in encouraging users to power-down at night? You could potentially eliminate running bots, protect yourself from the next virus outbreak, keep your data safe, etc. Do security concerns and power consumption issues matter enough to do this?”
He’s not wrong, not at all. When I was working at the University of Lausanne, I cannot count the number of Mac or Windows machines that were left on at night… for no reason. So, either they could be used for some grid computing projects (such a programm is being developped at the University of Lausanne) but if not, just shut’em down !

The iPhone (untold) Story !

In its February issue, Wired is publishing “The Untold Story” of the Apple iPhone. You can either read the whole article or go to Walleywag which get the essential of the whole story in a 300 words version.
Can you imagine Steve Jobs, being angry at you but, instead of screaming or whatever, just giving you a scary stare ? Just thinking of it makes me shiver !

Monopole vs Monopole ?
Filed Under informatique | Leave a Comment

This has been published around and around in the last days but I can’t resist to publish it again as it’s really a stunning demonstration. Furthermore, it seems that Shai Avidan, co-creator of this development has joined Adobe so expect interesting new features in software such as Photoshop !
